Average Auto Loan Rates: What to Expect in 2026

When you start shopping for a car, one of the first numbers you want to see is the average auto loan rate. It sets the stage for your monthly payment, your total interest cost, and even the type of vehicle you can afford. But here is the catch: that average changes constantly, and it depends heavily on your credit score, the loan term, and whether you are buying new or used. In this guide, we break down current benchmarks, explain how lenders set your rate, and show you how to position yourself for the best possible deal.

What Is the Average Auto Loan Rate Right Now?

As of early 2026, the average auto loan rate for a new car hovers around 6.8% for borrowers with excellent credit, while the average for a used car sits closer to 9.5%. These figures come from major financial data sources and reflect the broader economic environment, including the Federal Reserve’s rate decisions and the health of the auto lending market. However, the rate you are offered can be significantly different, often ranging from 4% to 15% or more, depending on your financial profile.

It is important to view these averages as a starting point, not a guarantee. Lenders evaluate each application individually, weighing factors like your credit history, debt-to-income ratio, and the loan-to-value ratio of the vehicle. For example, a borrower with a FICO score above 780 might see rates near 5% on a 36-month new car loan, while someone with a score below 620 could face double-digit rates or even difficulty getting approved without a co-signer.

To get a clearer picture of what you might qualify for, it helps to compare offers from multiple lenders. The same way you would compare mortgage rates, you should shop around for auto financing. A difference of even one percentage point can save you hundreds of dollars over the life of the loan. For instance, on a $30,000, 60-month loan, a 6% rate costs about $580 per month, while a 7% rate costs about $594 per month. Over five years, that 1% difference adds up to nearly $840.

How Lenders Determine Your Auto Loan Rate

Your credit score is the single most influential factor in setting your auto loan rate, but it is not the only one. Lenders also look at your income stability, employment history, and the amount of debt you already carry. A high credit score signals that you have a history of paying bills on time, which reduces the lender’s risk, so they reward you with a lower rate. Conversely, a lower score forces lenders to charge more to offset the higher risk of default.

Beyond credit, the loan term and the age of the vehicle matter. Shorter terms, like 36 or 48 months, typically come with lower rates because the lender’s money is at risk for a shorter period. Used cars carry higher rates than new ones because they depreciate faster and have a higher chance of mechanical issues. Additionally, the size of your down payment plays a role. A larger down payment reduces the loan amount and can sometimes unlock a better rate, as it shows the lender you have skin in the game.

To understand where you stand before you visit a dealership, check your credit score from all three major bureaus. You can also use a mortgage calculator or a similar financial tool to estimate how different rates affect your monthly budget. Credit Score Tiers and Typical Rates

Here is a snapshot of what borrowers with different credit profiles might expect for a new car loan in the current market:

• Excellent (780+): Rates often start around 5.0% to 6.0% for a 48-month term.
• Good (700-779): Rates typically range from 6.0% to 8.0%.
• Fair (620-699): Rates can climb to 9.0% to 13.0%.
• Poor (below 620): Rates may exceed 14%, and approval often requires a co-signer or a larger down payment.

These figures are estimates, and the actual rate you receive will depend on the lender and the specific details of your application. If your score falls in the fair or poor range, it is worth spending a few months improving it before applying. Even a 50-point increase can move you into a lower rate bracket, saving you thousands over the loan term.

New vs. Used Car Loans: The Rate Gap

The average auto loan rate for new cars is almost always lower than the rate for used cars, and the gap has been widening in recent years. New cars come with full manufacturer warranties and have not been subjected to previous wear, so they are less risky for lenders. Used cars, especially those that are several years old, carry more uncertainty about reliability and resale value, which pushes rates higher.

As of early 2026, the spread between new and used car rates is about 2.5 to 3 percentage points. For example, a borrower with good credit might get a 6.5% rate on a new car, but the same borrower could be quoted 9.0% for a three-year-old used vehicle. This gap can make a significant difference in your monthly payment. On a $25,000 loan over 60 months, a 6.5% rate costs about $489 per month, while a 9.0% rate costs about $519 per month. Over the life of the loan, that is an extra $1,800 in interest.

Sometimes, buying a slightly used car with a higher rate still results in a lower overall cost than buying new, because the purchase price is lower. You need to compare the total cost of ownership, including interest, depreciation, and insurance, to make the best financial decision. A good rule of thumb is to focus on the out-the-door price and the APR together, not just the monthly payment.

Refinancing Your Auto Loan to Get a Better Rate

If you already have an auto loan, you might be paying a rate that is higher than the current average auto loan rate. This often happens when you financed through the dealership without shopping around, or when your credit score has improved since you took out the loan. Refinancing allows you to replace your existing loan with a new one that has better terms, potentially lowering your interest rate and reducing your monthly payment.

Refinancing makes the most sense when interest rates have dropped since you signed your original loan, or when your credit score has improved significantly. For example, if you originally financed at 11% with a fair credit score, but now you have a 740 score, you might qualify for a 6% rate. On a $20,000 balance with 48 months remaining, that change could save you over $2,000 in interest.

Before you refinance, check for prepayment penalties on your current loan. Most auto loans do not have them, but some subprime lenders do. Also, consider the length of the new loan. Extending the term to lower your payment might reduce your monthly burden, but it will cost more in interest over time. The goal is to secure a lower rate without stretching the term unnecessarily.

How to Get the Best Auto Loan Rate in 2026

Securing a rate below the national average requires preparation and strategy. Here are five actionable steps you can take before you walk into a dealership or apply online:

1. Check your credit report for errors. Dispute any inaccuracies that could be dragging your score down. Even a small correction can boost your score by 20 points or more.
2. Shop around for pre-approval. Submit applications to banks, credit unions, and online lenders within a 14-day window. This allows multiple credit inquiries to count as one for scoring purposes.
3. Consider a shorter loan term. A 36-month loan usually has a lower rate than a 72-month loan. If you can afford the higher payment, you will save on interest.
4. Make a larger down payment. Aim for at least 20% of the vehicle’s price. This reduces your loan-to-value ratio, which can improve your rate.
5. Get pre-approved before visiting the dealership. This gives you leverage to negotiate and prevents the finance manager from marking up your rate.

Following these steps can help you land a rate that is closer to the best available, rather than the average. Remember, the dealership is not your only option. Credit unions often offer lower rates than traditional banks, and online lenders can be competitive as well. By comparing multiple offers, you put yourself in the driver’s seat.

If you are also thinking about buying a home in the near future, it is worth noting that your auto loan rate and the size of your car payment can affect your mortgage qualification. Lenders look at your debt-to-income ratio, and a high car payment can reduce the amount you can borrow for a house. Comparing Auto Loan Rates with Mortgage Rates

While auto loans and mortgages are different products, the same principles of rate shopping apply. Both are influenced by the broader economy, your credit profile, and the loan term. However, mortgage rates are typically lower than auto loan rates because they are secured by real estate, which holds its value better than a car. The current average 30-year fixed mortgage rate is around 6.2%, which is actually lower than the average new car loan rate of 6.8%.

This comparison is useful if you are planning to buy a home and a car around the same time. You might prioritize paying down your auto loan to improve your debt-to-income ratio before applying for a mortgage. Alternatively, you might choose to delay a car purchase until after you close on a home, to avoid adding new debt that could jeopardize your mortgage approval.

On RateChecker, we offer tools for both types of loans. You can use our mortgage rate discovery tool to see current home loan rates, and the same platform can help you understand auto loan trends.
